Od kolegów z Bułgarii:

dear friends,

the situation if sofia is quite complicated.

a month ago this student organization made a protest because a 20-year old student was brutally killed inside the city campus. this used to be an area designated to provide accommodation for university students coming from abroad and outside of sofia but right now it looks more like a casino&turbo-folk shithole with very little space for the students themselves.

Society recognized commodification of the campus as the main reason behind the murder so a lot of people rushed to the streets to protest.

At first, the students had very concrete demands such as end of restitution, nationalization, swift charges and incarceration of the murderers etc. Because many people supported them by coming to the protest, the organizers went a bit delusioned and the next protest they made was framed not as "student" but as "national." It was organized together with some environmentalist organizations and women's associations. I think even agriculturalist unions took part.

This opened up space for "all national members" to act, not least because the organizers did not spend too much time talking to students but to neo-nazi football hooligans (out of sheer ignorance) whom they invited as a crowd in order to impess the government.

Now, there is something quite fishy in Sofia about the neo-nazi football hools: some speculate that they are actually hitmen for the drug mafia and have been used by the mafia dn their politician-friends to sabotage all organization and manifestation of radical grass-roots social groups in general, and the protest in particular.

At the beginning people gathered peacefully in front of Parliament (waving national flags at the national protest). Then the neo-nazi came, wearing these very special anonymizing hoods (see attachment) and started throwing snowballs, firecrackers and stuff like that and the police naturally attacked back.

The police beat up many fascists, eventually they rounded em up and arrested them. However, many peaceful demonstrators also got beaten up coz the police are lacking the gift of discernment and perhaps, could not make the difference between neo-nazi in full regalia (bomber jackets, hoods, army shoes and camouflage pants) and ordinary people.

Today there was held another protest, this time round without the provocators. we speculate they did not go bcoz they did a pretty good job discrediting the protest yesterday.
