On the weekend of July 22-23, the first congress of Students' Iniative took place in Warsaw. (Click on czytaj dalej for more. Registered users can set English as their default language.)
Delegates from around the country met at the Warsaw Infoshop to discuss their goals, organization and upcoming campaigns. The participants ranged in age from 13-17.
Some ideas they agreed on was to write up a list of postulates for immediate reform which include giving students equal say in the decision-making process in schools and encouraging students to be more active. They don't want religion as a subject in school (unless after school and voluntarily)
and they don't want students to be punished for attendance or "behaviour". Among some ideas they had were the publication of a newsletter and monitoring students' rights in schools; they want to publish blacklists of
schools where students are beaten, degrading or in any way have their rights trampled on.
They decided that they weren't an anarchist organization, even though a lot (if not most) of them are. But they run the network on anarchist principles. They want to be open to people with other points of views who are willing to work in a non-hierarchical manner. The students decided that they would be
open about their cooperation with the Anarchist Federation, despite threats
of legal action against them for this.
