A group of members and supporters of the CNT in Tenerife held a protest on December 20 at the Labour Directorate of the Canary Islands. This was part of a continuing campaign to denounce accidents at work and the terrorism of employers which is supported by the government, but at the local and European level and by collaborationist unions.

The figures are clear: according to the World Health Organization, there are more than 2 million deaths a year from workplace accidents. This is equal to the entire popularion of the Canaries. At the local level, the number of workplace accident deaths is terrible, with more than 150 deaths in the last five years.

Obviously, given this reality, there is little point talking about institutional campaigns which attempt to trick people and give them a false sense of security when we know very well that for the business, we're just one more tool that can be substituted at any time and that doing this is cheaper than paying for insurance or complying with health and safety measures at work. An example of the low priority given to safety, (even more painful because it was published in the magazine published by the Canary Institute of Work Safety) is this image, which shows a failure to take measures to prevent occupational hazards. We wonder if this institute dedicated to workplace safety doesn't make the entrepreneurs more interested in filling their pockets than in preventing accidents.

To name just a few of the problems on this cover:

-The workers have no lifelines securing them.
-There are no safety nets to catch falling objects or persons.
-There are people working in areas without any protection fence, and so on.

Given this reality, we must organize workers so that each day at work does not bring a death sentence for anyone. Organize ensure that the necessary safety measures are taken, campaign to prevent casual and day labourer jobs, which are terribly damaging to the health of workers and to ensure our human dignity.
