Death of Protestor: Victims of Social Injustice Become More and More Desperate
Akai47, Śro, 2010-07-07 04:49 EnglishAt 7AM Monday morning, a worker opening up the administrative office in the city of Pruszcz found Remigiusz Thiede dead in front of its doors. Thiede had been on hunger strike at the office and claimed he would stay their "until the end".
Thiede appeared on June 24, demanding, among other things, to get help to pay for medicine. He was demanding "decent living conditions" since, like many pensioners, his pension was grossly insufficient to pay for food, housing and medicine. Old people who need medicine are often unable to afford it. Thiede claimed that, since we was being killed, he might as well stay there and die so that those responsible could witness his tragedy.
Thiede is one of many victims of the murderous social policies in Poland. While prices are kept on market levels. pensions and wages are usually far too low to meet daily needs.
More and more people are taking desperate measures. Protestors have been chained and camped outside the Ministry of Justice in Warsaw for a few weeks now. Hunger strikes are increasingly more common, not only amongst workers, but also those who have lost their apartments. This week in Lodz, a family of four even threatened to kill itself during an eviction attempt.
Unfortunately much of Polish society has not learned to join together and fight yet, instead choosing these individual and self-destructive methods.
