May Day in Russia and Ukraine

Świat | English

In Russia and Ukraine, anarchist organized May Day demonstrations in a number of cities, including Moscow, Kiev, Tyumen, Irkutsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Tver, Rostov, Kazan and Krasnoyarsk. In other cities, including St. Petersburg, the anarchists went out in some opposition marches.

In Moscow, about 50-60 anarchists marched until the police decided to repress them and 20 people were arrested. The city has become more and more repressive towards demonstrators to the point where one cannot even make an independent demonstration anymore. People were arrested even before they got to the march.

Earlier in the day, anarchists had visited the demos of the "blue union" - official corrupt union federation FNPR - and also the Communist Party to agitate and counterdemonstrate.

In Kiev, anarchists held a demo with antifascists and libertarian leftists. About 100 people came and marched to the monument of Franco. There some anarchist and antifascist speeches were made, including one by Peter Rausch who ran away from repression in Russia. (He was hunted by police as a suspect in an antifascist fight.)

In Rostov and Tyumen, where there were more modest actions, there were repressions: in Tyumen one guy was arrested for handing out leaflets and in Rostov three communists who came to the demo were arrested for unfolding a banner.

In Nizhny Novgorod, besides traditional May Day actions, a McShit got a paint bomb and anarchists planted a tree. Seems like an odd combination, but I suppose nobody has anything against trees.

In Irkutsk only a few people seemed to come out but anarchists also visited the official blue trade union May Day to agitate.
